An Incredible Long Bill

Can you believe the long, thin, down-curved bill?

It can be more than eight inches long and has a droplet-shaped tip.

The long-billed curlew, in the sandpiper family,  is North America's largest of the shore birds, but more often than not, is seen away from the shore.

When inland, the long-billed curlew eats mostly insects and worms, When in coastal areas, it probes in the mud with its long bill for shellfish, crabs and fish.

Can you imagine doing everyday things like, eating, drinking, scratching, kissing and, in the case of the long-bill curlew, flying with an eight inch bill?

It is interesting to watch this bird as it quickly walks along probing for food, with amazing dexterity, manipulating its long down curved bill!

The long-billed curlew's
flight is a bit erratic at first, but when well under way it is strong and steady...
